We are looking at one of the most iconic and sought-after watches in Rolex history: the GMT-Master Ref. 6542 from 1959. This model not only marked the beginning of one of Rolex’s most famous lines, but also combines technical and historical details that make it a true grail for collectors.

Developed from the Turn-O-Graph Ref. 6202, this watch was specifically designed to meet the needs of Pan-Am pilots, allowing them to track two time zones simultaneously. Its distinctive feature is the iconic bi-color red and blue 24-hour bezel, where the color division visually separates day and night hours. Complementing the GMT function, the famous red arrow hand allows for easy adjustment of the second time zone by simply rotating the bezel.

This piece represents a perfect balance of technical innovation and historical significance. It is not only famous for its Pan-Am connection but also for appearing on the big screen, worn by Pussy Galore in the legendary film “Goldfinger” (1959), cementing its status as an icon beyond watchmaking.

One of the most fascinating and rare features of the Rolex GMT-Master 6542 is the original bakelite bezel, used in the earliest production before being replaced due to fragility and the presence of radium. Radium was initially applied to the bezel for visibility in the dark, but was later discontinued due to safety concerns, making surviving examples with the original radioactive bezel extremely rare.

The example presented is a true one-of-a-kind: fully original, with a radioactive bakelite bezel, accompanied by box, guarantee, COSC certificate, and original invoice. Watches in this condition are exceptionally rare. On the market, models with replaced components sell between €15,000 and €45,000, while pieces like this, in full-set configuration and perfectly preserved, have achieved over €100,000, with exceptional examples exceeding €200,000 at auction.

An unrepeatable opportunity for discerning collectors, destined to become the crown jewel of any high-end vintage watch collection.
